Resumen:Topological invariants of objects like knots and 3-manifolds are only practically useful insofar as one is able to efficiently compute them. So, for any given invariant, it is interesting to try to quantify its computational complexity.

Beyond just being an interesting “theoretical” problem, such complexity-theoretic issues are foundational to topological quantum computation. I’ll spend most of the talk introducing these ideas. Time permitting, I’ll report on work-in-progress with Colleen Delaney that says, roughly: coupling a finite group gauge symmetry to a topological quantum computer can not create a more powerful computer.
