Seminario de Categorías

Resumen: Initially, the centre of a monoidal category was used independently by V. Drinfeld in connection with Hopf algebras and by A. Joyal and the speaker to study the category of framed tangles. We were influenced by lectures of Yu. Manin in Montréal and the work of D. Yetter and V. Turaev. In this talk I will give a gentle introduction to how the construction can be viewed in various ways. In particular, it is a limit construction which can be performed in other places besides the cartesian monoidal 2-category of categories. Some examples from different fields will be provided.
