Resumen: We give an elementary introduction to some ideas in double category theory by concentrating on one particular example, the double category of rings with homomorphisms, and bimodules. Along the way we discover a number of “new” morphisms of rings, interesting in their own right. We also look at interesting double adjunctions in this context.
No previous knowledge of double categories is assumed, just some familiarity with categories, rings and modules.
